More Than Mulch: Can Foam Improve Nutrient Uptake?

When it comes to healthy crops, the condition of the soil is just as important as the plant itself. Yet for many growers, managing the space between rows or under vines is a constant trade-off: let weeds grow and risk competition and mildew, or lay down plastic mulch and risk damaging the soil.
Frosco’s new biodegradable foam mulch aims to change that.
Still in development, this foam-based ground cover is designed to support the plant’s root zone microclimate, delivering more than just weed control. It insulates the soil against sudden temperature swings, helps retain moisture, and even has the potential to deliver nutrients gradually over time — all without the long-term harm caused by plastic sheeting.
🌱 Why does this matter?
Roots are sensitive. Fluctuating temperatures and moisture levels can stunt development and interfere with nutrient uptake, particularly in young crops. And while foliar feeding and fertigation can help, they’re only part of the picture.
A stable, healthy root zone improves nutrient absorption at the source — helping plants grow stronger with less stress.
✅ Beyond Nutrition, Foam Mulch Can Also:
Suppress weeds and disease by physically blocking light and releasing natural compounds
Encourage beneficial airflow under vine canopies to reduce mildew pressure
Support soil structure by breaking down into organic matter that enhances microbial activity and aggregation
Growers in viticulture, horticulture, and protective cropping systems like tomatoes and berries are expected to benefit most — particularly those already seeking alternatives to plastic mulch.
Frosco’s mulch concept is currently in early-stage validation, with field trials planned in collaboration with NIAB (National Institute of Agricultural Botany) in 2025. Research is also exploring custom pigment reflectance (e.g. charcoal for silver mulch effect, chlorophyll for green), enabling even greater control over crop conditions and growth response.
For growers interested in boosting early development, protecting long-term soil health, and simplifying their ground cover approach, foam-based mulch might soon offer a smarter, softer solution.
