Cooling Crops in a Heating World: Foam for Extreme Heat Protection

It’s no longer a question of if heatwaves will strike — it’s when, and how hard. From sunburnt fruit to stalled growth and failed flowering, extreme heat can devastate crops just as surely as frost. For many growers, there are few reliable tools for protection once temperatures soar.

That’s why we’ve been developing something new: a biocompatible foam designed not just to insulate against cold, but to buffer crops from heat as well.

And early signs are promising.

🌾 Wheat Field Trial: A Real Temperature Gap

In summer 2024, we tested an early version of our extreme heat foam on wheat. The results were striking.

Crops treated with the foam maintained internal temperatures that were 5–7°C cooler than untreated controls — enough to protect flowering heads and reduce the risk of irreversible damage.

This cooling effect could help mitigate:

Heat-induced sterility during flowering

Fruit sunburn (especially in berries and grapes)

Transpiration loss and dehydration

Stress-triggered pest and disease vulnerability

🧪 How It Works

The foam forms a thin, breathable layer over the plant surface. While light still passes through for photosynthesis, the structure slows heat transfer — reducing direct thermal stress and helping maintain a more stable plant temperature during critical hours.

Like all Frosco foams, it’s:

Biodegradable and plant-safe

Non-toxic to pollinators and beneficials

Easy to spray on and wash off

Free from plastic or synthetic chemicals

🌍 Why It Matters

With extreme heat events becoming more frequent, growers are being asked to do more with less — less water, less margin for error, and less time to react.

Frosco’s heat-protection foam is being developed to help ease that pressure. It's not a silver bullet, but it’s a scalable tool that can give crops a crucial edge in the face of rising temperatures.
